Courage and strength

Joshua 1:9

"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go."Joshua 1:9, NIV

Reflection

God says this to Joshua right when Joshua is about to lead a million people across a river into a war he didn't choose. The command isn't 'feel brave.' It's 'be brave' — an act, not a feeling. The reason is the second half: God's presence isn't conditional on Joshua's emotional state. It comes wherever he goes. You can act in courage you don't feel because the basis of the courage isn't your feeling — it's the company you're in. The walk is forward. The presence is alongside.

Prayer

Lord, I'm not feeling brave today. Let me act in the courage your presence gives, not the courage my feelings would supply.
