Perseverance through trial

James 1:2-4

"Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything."James 1:2-4, NIV

Reflection

James doesn't say feel joy. He says consider joy — calculate it, account for it, factor it in. Trials, on their own, don't feel like joy. But you can decide that they're producing something valuable, and that decision changes how you walk through them. Perseverance is not a personality trait you're born with. It's a muscle that gets built specifically by being tested. If you're in the middle of something hard, you're not failing; you're being formed.

Prayer

God, let me consider this trial as it really is — not as the end of me, but as the forming of me.
