A basket is a ham or a turkey, potatoes, greens, rice, cooking oil, milk, juice, bread, and something sweet. Enough for a family to cook a real holiday meal in their own kitchen instead of standing in a line.
Every basket also carries one wrapped gift for each child in the house. The families are referred by the school counselors and the shelter down the road, and nobody has to explain themselves to get one.
This is the biggest thing the church does all year, and it is the one that runs out of money first.
